The ambiance at Nando’s was very nice and cheerful, geared towards a young audience: nice furniture, comfortable chairs, and nice decor. I liked the ambiance but the experience would be better if the music is softer
The starters were served quite rapidly: we got Mushroom Bowl, Hummus with PERi PERi Drizzle and PERi PERi soup with Garlic Bread.Mushroom Bowl immediately grabbed my attention. I like onion, and I was very curious about this combo, which turned out to be very nice. Both onions and mushrooms were marinated, and smelled really awesome. Thumbs up for that appetiser. Having lived in the US, I am quite used to hummus (which can nowadays be found almost everywhere). The texture was nice, and they kept the hummus taste mild, to give prominence to the spicy sauce. The hummus was served with Pita bread, which was soft but a bit too thick for my liking. I would have preferred something crunchy to go with the hummus. The soup was a standard mushroom soup, but the garlic bread was a good surprise. It tasted really nice, at the same time not feeling too greasy and unhealthy, like many times it happens in American diners (a note to make justice to Italian cousine: garlic bread is one of the many American dishes considered Italian, but that really do not exist in Italy).
Our main dishes were the Chicken Butterfly and Chicken Caesar Wrap. Let me write this from the point of view of somebody who is not into spicy food, and into sauces in general. I really did appreciate the grilled Chicken Butterfly as is. The quality of the meat was good, it was well done, while keeping at the same time a soft texture.
This was due to the marinade, which provided a nice subtle taste. We opted for a lemon & herbs marinade, and I could taste the herbs. I did taste the chicken with the Peri Peri sauce (all types apart from very spicy), but I did not like it: Peri Peri is sour and spicy, none of which I like. I think an important point of my review is that you might still appreciate Nando’s even if you are not into spicy food.
I appreciated the Chicken Caesar Wrap as well. The chicken meat was tender and well blended with the veggies, herbs and mild sauce within the wrap. It was easy to chew even for my dining partner who is wearing braces. Being a fan of marinated and grilled vegetables, I would give thumbs up to Nando’s for meeting my expectation for this Chicken Caesar Wrap.
We tasted quite a few sides: the Chargrilled Veg, the side salad, the Red Skin Mashed potato, and the chips. Let’s start from the chips, which were the first things I stole from Kelvin’s plate. They were well done, chunky, and not greasy at all. The Red Skin Mashed potato is American style mashed potato: thick and filling, not particularly tasty. I took a bite, and then passed to better stuff. I did not taste the salad, as my attention went to the Chargrilled Veg. I really like grilled veggies, and those were really well done, a nice option for somebody who prefers a healthy side to go with the chicken.
When dessert came we were clearly full, so we just sampled a bit of everything: Natas (custard tarts with Cinnamon), the Salted Caramel Brownie, and the Caramel Cheesecake. We also both ordered Bottomless Frozen Yoghurt. I really liked the Natas, with their subtle and not overly sweet taste. I actually got two, even though I was so full :-). The salted caramel brownie had an interesting covering, but nothing special apart from that. The Caramel cheesecake was instead really good, with bold taste, nice texture, and again, not overly sweet: a true accomplishment given we are talking about caramel taste.
The Bottomless Froyo was surprisingly good, in my opinion much better than the one they serve at some famous froyo joints. The bottomless part means you can top up as much as you wish. Putting Froyo as a dessert after a spicy meal is a really thoughtful idea. Kudos to Nando’s! Not to mention that there are Coca-Cola freestyle drinks and PERi-PERi sauces are also available on the menu for diners to eat or drink to their hearts’ content.
Good news for all the fans of Nando’s, Nando’s Singapore will be making substantial operational and pricing changes.N Not only will Nando’s be transforming from a full-service casual dining to a fast-casual dining restaurant with the introduction of its Hosted Cockerel Service, 10 percent service charge incurred by diners will be removed and there is also downward revision of core menu prices across the board! This will be rolled out in all Nando’s Singapore restaurants progressively, and fully completed by June 2019. Aren’t you excited, people?
