I wish to say I have never regretted anything in my life. But I did! One of my biggest regrets is to have a tattoo on my ankle. During my 20s, it was trendy and cool to have one at the ankle. And I had one during one of my low periods to cheer myself up. Something with colours to symbolise happiness and hope. Of course, years after that, I honestly regretted having that tattoo. The colours faded to an extent where I felt it was ugly, and I just wanted to remove it.
So here are some questions I asked when I visited Dr Chow Yuen Ho with regards to tattoo removal via Pico Laser at The Clifford Clinic.
How does tattoo removal work?
Similar to how a bruise fades, unwanted tattoos can be erased with Pico laser removal. This technique uses short bursts of light at a specific wavelength to target the ink particles. These particles break down into tiny fragments that your body’s lymphatic system can then eliminate, gradually causing the tattoo to lighten and disappear.
How long does the procedure take per session?
The procedure takes a few minutes, while it takes 30 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect.
Is tattoo removal painful?
Dr Chow: Depending on the pain tolerance of each individual, you might experience some stinging sensation. The application of numbing cream will help to minimise the pain and discomfort.
HC: I feel that the pain is bearable, and it gets better after each session.
How many sessions are needed?
Depending on the size, the colours, the location of the tattoo and the age of the tattoo. Larger tattoo, coloured tattoo, tattoo on thinner skin area such as ankle and new tattoo might take a few more sessions. Typically, it will take at least eight sessions.
What are the side effects?
Depending on the individual, some side effects include redness, swelling, and blistering.
Will I suffer from scarring?
There is a small risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation, especially if your tattoos are coloured.
How long is the downtime?
After your treatment, you might experience some redness and light scabbing around the treated area. This usually clears up within a week.
What is post-treatment care?
The post-treatment care includes applying an antibiotic ointment till the redness subsides which is around three days. Avoid sun exposure and vigorous exercise to prevent irritation and infection.
Last but not least, how much does it cost?
Each tattoo is unique so the cost is different as it is dependent on the size and location. Hence, it is best to make an appointment for consultation to understand the price range. You can also WhatsApp them them a picture of your tattoo for a quote at 8318 6332.
While tattoo will not be removed in 1 treatment session, I feel good to be in good hands. With every session I can see the tattoo getting less visible. I can’t wait to see the tattoo to be completely removed.
