NEW a la carte Peranakan buffet at Peppermint

When PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay was closed for a major revamp, I was a tad sad as I have fond memory of AquaMarine (now known as Peppermint) and its wonderful buffet spread. Hence, I am very excited to share with you more about Peppermint and its all-you-can-eat a la carte Peranakan buffet.

Besides a wide variety of Asian and International favourites that are freshly prepared and served to the table, Peppermint’s new menus also include plant-based options as well as sustainably- and locally-sourced ingredients such as oysters, tiger prawns, mussels and even barramundi.

Served in a tingkat, we have ayam buah keluak, nyonya chap chye and blue butterfly pea rice. There is always something about Peranakan food that made dieting, something that can wait till tomorrow as all the dishes are shouting for rice. I like the ayam buah keluak a lot as the flavours of this dish is so rich and aromatic that one cannot never resist the temptation to reach out for an extra serving.

When we were having this piping hot Hee Peow Tang (Fish Maw Soup), one of my dining partner jokingly said that the amount of fish maw in the soup is really generous and by having a few more bowls, we will be able to break even from paying for the buffet. lol

Itek Sio aka Peranakan Braised Duck is one of the dishes that is not commonly seen as it requires tedious preparation and cooking process. Hence, it is a joy to see this being served at Peppermint. I like how the duck is so fork tender and so full of flavor. Yes, more rice please.

As I previously shared that Peppermint utilised locally sourced ingredients. Instead of using Mackerel, the restaurant uses sustainable barramundi that is cooked in in a peppery gravy.

Instead of using whole chicken, Peppermint gives Ayam Goreng Rendang a modern twist by using a chicken cultlet. I like the added textural bite that is coupled with the sweet and tangy sauce. Simply divine and of cos, it means more rice please.

I am a fan of anything assam. Needless to say, Udang Assam Nanas (Freshwater prawn simmered in pineapple assam gravy) is one of my favourite. I like how there is a balance between sweetness and tartness as well as how I do not need to peel that big, fat and juicy prawn. Yummmm

For those who like nonya laksa, there is also a dried version at Peppermint. While my dinning partners and I thought that it is a relatively rich dish, it is packed with flavours, just like the usual nonya laksa with the laksa broth that has went through a gravy reduction.

What is a Peranakan meal without any kueh kueh? You will be delighted to know that there is a good selection of nonya kueh as well as cakes available to end your meal on a sweet note.

The a la carte Peranakan buffet lunch is going at $65/adult, child $32.50 while dinner is $88/adult, child $44 for child. If you are holding UOB,DBS/POSB, Maybank or Bank of China (BOC) credit card, you will get to enjoy 1-for-1 a la carte buffet for Monday and Tuesday; 1 dines free with 2 other paying adults for Wednesdays and Thursdays and 1 dines free with 3 other paying adults on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Although the restaurant has a seating capacity of 202 pax, I would still highly recommend table reservation to be make early.
