Cheese lovers rejoice! ‘Tis the season to be bowled over by District 10 Bar & Restaurant at UE Square’s latest festive offerings, including two fiery new pasta dishes prepared tableside in huge Grana Padano cheese wheels from Italy. In addition to pastas, promotional cheese wheel menu also includes risottos and even salads! If you’re lactose-intolerant or cheese just isn’t your thing, don’t fret. District 10 offers a wide variety of Italian-style fare and other western-style favourites such as burgers and steaks so there’s bound to be something for everyone to enjoy at District 10’s flagship outlet.
At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking of District 10 Bar & Restaurant as a strictly after-work joint given its sleek styling, contemporary piped music and youthful crowd. But District 10 is also a great place for families, with child seats readily available and a bouncy castle set up in the restaurant’s alfresco area on weekends!
Starting off the night was the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, Rocket Lettuce and 24-month old Shaved Parmesan Cheese ($18++). Apart from being appropriately festive in its colours – red, green and golden yellow – this dish was light and incredibly well-balanced. The tender, flavourful and mildly sweet slivers of beef paired beautifully with the bitter rocket leaves, sharp and salty cheese shavings, and tart balsamic vinegar. Accented with sliced mushrooms and a generous drizzle of fruity olive oil, this dish was an excellent starter to whet the appetite.
Drenched in full-bodied and herbaceous tomato sauce and topped with molten layer of mozzarella cheese, the fork-tender Oven Baked Eggplant Alla Parmigiana Style ($17++) will sway even the staunchest meat-eaters into finishing their veggies. The eggplant’s almost creamy mouthfeel blends seamlessly with the savoury tartness of the sauce and the stringy, gooey goodness of the melted cheese to create a perfect harmony in every spoonful. Given the dish’s relative heft as a starter, especially compared to the earlier Beef Carpaccio dish, I would recommend ordering it to be shared. Or just come hungry and have it all for yourself!
Hot from the kitchen, the Linguine with Mixed Seafood in a Spicy Tomato Basil Sauce ($28++) – which is a new festive offering – was finished in the Grana Padano cheese wheel, turning the dish from a vibrant red to a creamy orange as the cheese began to incorporate into the sauce. Each serving is brimming with seafood including mussels, clams, squid and prawns – all of which were fresh and juicy. Mixing the pasta directly in the cheese wheel ensured that every strand of linguine and every piece of seafood was enveloped in the luscious sauce, making each bite satisfying. Thanks to the hint of spiciness in the sauce and the sweetness of the seafood, the dish was not cloying despite its creaminess. Not to worry though, the sauce’s spiciness is somewhat mild and should be manageable for those with a lower tolerance level. This new dish will only be available during the festive season until the end of December, so don’t miss it!
The Spaghetti with Smoked Salmon in Light Cream Sauce ($28++), also a new festive promotional addition onto the menu, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. What sets this dish apart from the other cheese wheel dishes on offer is the awe-inducing fire show that accompanies its preparation. Vodka is set ablaze and cooked off inside the cheese wheel before the spaghetti and smoked salmon are added to the mix. The dancing flames are bound to gain you some rubberneckers and envious looks from neighbouring tables, and would undoubtedly be a fun spectacle for friends and family. Not just a feast for the eyes, the spaghetti was al dente and evenly coated with an intensely creamy and cheesy sauce. The smoked salmon was also well-distributed throughout the dish and had just the right amount of saltiness to keep the dish from teetering over the edge. A word from the wise: tuck in while it’s still hot and fresh off the cheese wheel as the sauce tends to thicken as it cools. This won’t be much of an issue though, especially if you’re a fan of creamy pastas, as you’ll be licking up your plate in no time! Only available till the end of December, make sure you seize the chance to enjoy both great food and a fiery tableside performance while you still can!
Slice into the egg nestled at the heart of the District 10 Pizza and watch the golden yellow yolk ooze like the sun’s unfolding rays onto the mushroom, pancetta ham and yellow zucchini toppings. The eggy surprise is sure to elicit plenty of oohs and aahs round the table. The pizza’s crust is delightfully thin and crispy, with just the right amount of char to lend a beautiful golden brown colour to the dish.
Rounding out the evening was the Traditional Italian Tiramisu ($14++). Served in a large coffee cup topped with a light dusting of cocoa powder, fresh raspberries and mint, the dessert is certainly Instagram-worthy in its presentation. Its beauty, however, is more than just skin deep. Sink your spoon into the pillowy mascarpone and moist ladyfingers for a light yet fulfilling treat with every mouthful. The tiramisu is not overly sweet and the coffee flavour shines through without being overpowering. Despite being a substantial portion, the dessert’s light and airy feel certainly makes it easy to savour every last morsel.
In addition to their cheese wheel promotional menu, District 10 Bar & Restaurant will also be offering a special festive menu for a limited time between 24 and 26 December 2016. Guests can enjoy communal dining over a hearty Mixed Grill Platter ($58++) comprising Ribeye Steak, Weisswurt Sausages, Grilled Pork Chop and Rosemary Chicken served with Mesclun Salad and Natural Cut Fries. There is also an additional option to add a Live Boston Lobster ($39++).
Celebrate the festive season sharing District 10 Bar & Restaurant’s exciting dishes and generous portions with your family and friends!
