With less than a month to Chinese New Year, it is really about sitting down and planning for where to have that most important dinner of 2016, the reunion dinner. Despite flying back just the night before, I am so glad that I have made it to Peony Jade @ Keppel Club located at Bukit Chermin. I have always heard good reviews about the consistence and quality of Peony Jade’s food. Hence I am excited with what executive chef, Ricky Liew, and his culinary team have created to welcome the lunar year of the fire monkey. The 8 new creations from the Peony Jade Chinese New Year Menu will be available from 14 January to 22 February 2016.
As part of the media preview, we have tried 4 dishes and an array of delectable desserts. Firstly, we tossed to prosperity and longevity with Peony Jade’s Instant Enormous Windfall, Good Health and Longevity”, 猴(厚)瑞添财,连年步步高捞生. The monkey-shaped Yu Sheng has premium ingrdients such as lobster from Canada, 2-head golden abalone from Australia, Geoduck clam, tuna (sashimigrade), salmon (sashimi-grade), crispy salmon fish skin, champagne jelly, lychee pulp-pops and edible 18k gold leaves. Atas much, right? This celebratory toss-for-fortune is priced at S$388.88 and serves up to 10 guests. 1-day advance order is required and it is available for dine-in at both Peony Jade outlets.
While we were watching the performance of the cantonese opera, “Triumph” – Premium Black Truffle and Braised Whole Abalone Poon Choi, 满载而归珍饈( 黑松露原隻发财鮑鱼盆菜), was served. At this point of time, I was very distracted as a strong whiff of truffle aroma has filled up the room. I like how rich the thicken broth is. It contains the essence from the 12 premium ingredients (shaved BLACK TRUFFLES, 6-head whole abalone from Australia, red grouper, shrimp balls with Foie Gras, fresh plump scallops, spikes sea cucumber from South Africa, king-size prawns, shiitake mushrooms, premium golden oysters, de-shelled crab claws, highgrade fish maw, taro and broccoli). Give me more, pls!
The Poon Choi comes in 3 sizes and 1-day advance order is required.
1. S$88.88 per person (with a minimum order of 2 sets),
2. S$498.88 for the medium pot (serves 6 guests) and
3. S$698.88 for the large pot (serves up to 10 guests).Beside the yusheng, Progress & Advancement Wealth, 禧龙添满福( 鱼子. 瑶柱. 蛋白炒波士顿龙虾) is another piece of art that was presented to the table. Boston Lobster was sauteed with egg white and topped with crispy golden conpoy, fish roe and caviar. This dish can serves up to 8 guests and is priced at $128.88.
Instead of a normal suckling pig, “Abounding Wealth”, 黄金大丰收, 大地亨通 ( 玉河畔发财鸿运生炒腊味糯米乳猪), is a pit-fire roasted deboned suckling pig rolls with stuffed with Glutinous rice & Chinese sausages. This dish is priced at $198.88 (half), serves up to 6 guests and $388.88 (whole), serves up to 10 guests. Again, this is another dish that required 1-day advance order. This is a love-hate dish for me as I am someone who like glutinous rice yet I am not a huge fan of suckling pig for that porky pig smell.
After the preview of some of the dishes, it is dessert time. Although by this time I was already very full, I was happily enjoying the desserts. My favourite was definitely the signature flaky Teochew orh-ni pastry with egg yolk (Teochew mah) and the signature Mao Shan Wang durian layered Nian Gao. The Mao Shan Wang durian layered Nian Gao ($88.88, serves 10-12 guests) was so good that it was wipe clean in no time and a few of my fellow foodie friends have also bought some home on the spot. The desserts are priced at S$68.88 per set and are available for Takeaways at all Peony Jade Restaurants and Takashimaya B2’s festive market. So check them out, I though the kumquat-shaped mochi and peach-shaped pastries look very good as a gift. Kumquat has meaning of wealth and luck,大吉大利, while peach signified wealth, abundance, longevity and great fortune.
IF you are feeling generous and looking for a gift to please your elderly, Triumphant Harvest & Longevity” Gift Set 灵猴献桃添寿,乐陶陶礼盒, is an exquisite limited edition gift set that enlivens the artistic take on the Monkey King’s beloved celestial peaches in the ancient Chinese folklore, Journey to the West. An auspicious token to bless the recipients with great bliss, health, wealth and triumph in all endeavours. There are only 88 sets, of 3 handmade chocolate monkey figurines harvesting the peach-shaped pastries, which are rich with molten salty-sweet egg yolk lava fillings, available. Priced at S$118.88 per set and while stocks last!
With the growing trend of having salted egg yolk in unconventional food, I have spotted Deep Fried Crispy Salmon Skin with SALTED EGG YOLK ($22.88 per jar)on Peony Jade’s CNY goodies menu. This is really addictive. One of my fellow blogger, hazel, has finished one jar of it on her own within the same day loh! So do check it out if you like salted egg yolk as well.
