Hearty Teochew Porridge Buffet Dinner at ParkRoyal on Kitchener Road

As a Teochew, porridge, aka Teochew mue (潮州糜), is the simplest form of comfort food that I would crave for any time any day, especially if it rains. Hence, when I heard that there is a Teochew Porridge Buffet Dinner, I said mai tui liao, let’s check it out!

As part of my eating more healthy resolution, I was happy to find a good selection of fruits available which included papaya and even chinese pear.

Beside steamed rice, plain porridge and sweet potato porridge, one can also find some stables such as fried bee hoon and yam rice. Do not mistaken Teochew porridge with Cantonese porridge as the former was more watery and with a more “solid” texture.

The cooking method of braising played a heavy emphasis as it is part of the characteristic of Teochew cuisine. Hence, on the buffet line you can see a great variety of traditionally braised dishes, from the innards to eggs, tau kwa, mushroom, pig trotter and even braised duck (which you must at least live live try a piece).

The condiments for the porridge were in abundance too. I like that there were even pork loin bak kwa, century eggs, salted duck eggs, fermented beancurd and even pork floss!

Lovers of vegetables will also be happy to find vegetables choices such as preserved mustard, stir-fried long beans with dried shrimp, stewed cabbage..etc.

One can also find Teochew Steam Sea Bass, Steamed Minced pork with Tang Chye, Teochew Fish Cake and deep-fried bites such as Seafood Wanton, Prawn Paste Chicken wing as well as chicken Ngoh Hiang on the buffet line. So please remember to pace yourself so that you can try more food!

The dessert range will also bring us back to our childhood with items like Banana Fritters, Handmade Tau Sar Piah, Kueh Lapis and even handmade muah chee!

So don’t say I bo jio ah, the Teochew Porridge Buffet Dinner at Spice Brasserie is available from Monday to Wednesday (excluding Public Holidays) from now till 31 May 2018! Priced at $29 per adult and $15 per child (below 12 years old), I thought it was relatively affordable.
