The perks of working in an international company is I have some German colleagues who will share with me about their culture, food and their Karneval which is a German traditional festival for hundreds of years. They called it the 5th season, or the season of fun! During this period, people would celebrate by feasting, drinking and they would even dance.
As Brotzeit is one of the popular German restaurants in town, we decided to head down to experience the Karneval. True enough, they are offering a specially-curated Karneval menu featuring the festival favourite food and traditional beer from the land of Karneval, Cologne. In the spirit of Gemütlichkeit (a feeling of warmth, friendliness and good cheer), Brotzeit launches their “We Dare You! Brotzeit Challenge”, a “Man vs Food” sausage-eating challenge where a pair of friends to finish eating a half meter sausage baguette together. The baguette is Deutsche Halbmeter Wurst with classic Nürnberger sausages served with sauerkraut and potato salad. If the pair able to finish the half meter baguette within 4 minutes, they will enjoy the baguette on the house as well as bragging rights as Brotzeit’s Wurst Champions.
Knowing my limits, the 8 of us shared the Deutsche Halbmeter Wurst ($29). The sausage was well seasoned with a hints of peppery note which make it slightly spicy.
You may also try the Zweierlei von Huhn (Duo of Chicken, $40) comprising half an oven-roasted chicken and half a golden fried chicken, served with fries and potato salad on the side. The oven-roasted chicken was tender and paired well with Brotzeit’s special brown sauce. Although the skin of the fried chicken skin was not as crispy as i like, it has this sweet and sour taste which is to my liking. Hence, we enjoyed this chicken platter.
Fans of Tapas are in for a treat. Karneval menu offers a variety of 12 different Tapas at reasonable prices: 3 for $15, 6 for $28 or 12 for $45. The German Tapas choices include: Bierbeisser, super food salad, spicy chicken sausages, currywurst, golden fried chicken, cheese spätzle, meatballs with mashed potato, seabass fillet, fried mushrooms, meatloaf in mini kaiser roll, chicken schnitzel in mini kaiser roll, and meat patty in mini kaiser roll.
Some of my favourite Tapas were thefried mushrooms, golden fried chicken and chicken schnitzel in mini kaiser roll, super food salad and meatballs with mashed potato. Oh yes, don’t forget to try the cheese spätzle too.
If you are looking for a beer to go with Karneval food, I would recommend Gaffel Kölsch, a warm fermented beer brewed according to a time-honoured family recipe that go at 1 bottle (0.3 L) at $10, bucket of 5 bottles at $48 or a 5 litre party keg at $98.
