On the first of 2014, I was craving for some penang assam laksa and I vaguely remembered my KL friend who raved about this restaurant located super near to Aljunied MRT Station.
Thus I made my way from the west to the east side of Singapore together with Shannen.
The renovation of the eatery has nothing to rave about. It’s just simple coffeeshop setting with air con. However I am kinda impressed by the service here. It’s relatively fast and food is delivered with a smile.
The Penang Assam Laksa here comes in 2 prices – $4.80 and $5.80. According to the waiter there, the price difference is because of the additional ingredient that are added for the $5.80 one. As I was having this mad craving, I ordered the $5.80. Presentation wise, I like the idea of it being served in those rooster bowl that is almost extinct in the modern Singapore. Personally I feel that the serving is quite big and I like the thick fish broth. It was a well balanced taste between sourness and spiciness. On top of that, there are a lot of mackerel flakes in every mouth of the assam laksa. For people who like the “hei gor” (Prawn paste), you can ask for more of it from the servers. Overall the assam laksa here is much better than many others that I had locally and in Malaysia( JB & KL). However personally I feel that if there are more mint leaves and shredded cucumber, it will be a perfect dish.
Similar to the Assam Laksa, the small prawn noodle comes in 2 prices and we ordered the $5.80 one. Personally I like the rich prawn broth very much. However both me and S felt that the prawns were overcooked. On top of that, I am not a big fan of yellow noodles. Thus this is a dish that I might skip the next time I am here unless I am craving for a bowl of hot prawn soup which is both rich and flavorful.
Both me and Shannen were quite surprised when this dish was served. The sambal petai ($11) serving was relatively huge as compare to anywhere else! As a health conscious person, I like any dish with petai a lot due to its health benefits such as curing ulcers, depression, heartburn and even hangover. On top of that, it also aids in digestion and also constipation. However the preparation work of this dish is rather a hassle as strangely worms love to wiggles their way into it. Thus I am very particular when I eat this dish outside. However I ordered this as I saw a group of 3~ 4 ladies cutting the petai and separating the ones with worms from those that good. Overall this is a very good dish to go down with a bowl of rice as the sambal chilli is inclined to the salty side side. However this is definitely a value for money dish as the serving here is very generous.
Overall I spent $22.60 including of GST. Personally I feel that it’s worth making the trip down to have the Assam Laksa and perhaps for other dishes on the menu. =)
