Lokal is the second F&B outlet from the same folks behind Sarnies. The word “Lokal” simply means “meeting place” in German. I am blessed to be invited to join Tony for this media tasting.
Located at the junction between Neil Road and Bukit Pasoh Road, beside Goethe Institut, Lokal serves several dishes which are German inspired.
V60 Pourover ($5.50) |
Siraj preparing our V60 |
We kicked start the tasting with a V60 pourover on El Salvador and I like how the pourover is presented in a breaker which reminded me of my school days. Indeed a pourover is like a science experiment, precise measurements and skills are required for a nice cuppa.
Mocha ($5.50) |
It is good to know that the coffee beans at Lokal are roasted by the folks at Sarnies. We were greeted by the sight of a glossy finish on the cuppa which also indicated good milk frothing.
Cold Brew ($6.50) |
Barista Siraj was very nice to share with us the parameters for the cold brew. This bottle of liquid gold was the baby of a 12-hours cold drip from the brewing equipment in this picture. 😉
Tony and I shared the Roasted Chicken Ciabata ($18), Black Pearl Breakfast BLT ($16) and the Califlower salad ($16). While the Roasted Chicken Ciabata and Black Pearl Breakfast BLT are very filling and tasted decent, I am most impressed with the Califlower Salad.
I like the complexity of this dish. While I tasted the natural sweetness from the carrot and dried apricot, there is crunchiness from the green beans and nuttiness from the almond. On top of that, the quinoa gives a filling and textual touch to the dish. The whey dressing gives a pleasant acidity to balance the dish and make it a very refreshing yet addictive dish. Despite the huge portion being served, I finished almost half of it on my own. ;P
We were very blessed to meet Co-owner Chef Darren Farr and he shared with us his interesting lifelong career as a chef. I am very inspired by this humble man.
Besides serving decent coffee, I like how many things are made from scratch at Lokal such as the butter, yogurt and ricotta cheese. A lot of time and effort are put in to prepare the food presented at the table. Besides the taste of the food, the serious attitude behind the food is admirable. Do give Lokal a try and share with me what do you think about this place. On the side note, The Entertainer App is offering 1 for 1 on their mains at Lokal. Don’t say got lobang, I didn’t share. 😉
