Time flies, it has been 10 years since Jay Chou’s movie, Secret, was released. But the romantic storyline of Xianglun and Xiaoyu remains fresh in my mind. Hence, when I heard Base Entertainment Asia and Perfect World Pictures (organiser of The Invincible 2 Jay Chou
Concert Tour 2018) were collaborating to present the musical, THE SECRET,at The Mastercard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands, I was super excited! The musical is the first of its kind Chinese production to harness the power of pop music in a
Broadway, jukebox musical format. If you are a fan of Jay Chou’s songs, you will be both amazed and thrilled to find out that many of Jay Chou’s popular songs are cleverly stitched into the musical while staying very close to the storyline of the movie.
I kid you not, as we all know that some of the songs like Sailors Afraid of Water <<水手怕水>> and Cowboy is Very Busy <<牛仔很忙>> can be quite a challenge to blend into the storyline seamlessly. But this was done brilliantly in The Secret Musical!
Some of the songs that are included are Clear Stars <<星晴>>, Listen to Mother’s Words <<听妈妈的话>>, Simple Love <<简单爱>>, The Tea Grandpa Makes <<爷爷泡的茶>>, Rooftop <<屋顶>>, The Fragrance of Rice <<稻香>>, Nocturnes <<夜曲>>, Fine Day <<晴天>>, and Dandelion’s Promise <<蒲公英的约定>>.
If you have not watched Jay Chou’s The Secret movie, the storyline was a romantic love story of a piano major student, Xianglun, who met the beautiful and mysterious Xiaoyu, a time traveler who travelled through the time by playing a tune on the old piano in the old clock tower.
The story slowly unveiled as Xianglun found out that Xiaoyu is not just his fellow classmate but someone from 20 years ago. Did this revelation stopped Xianglun from loving Xiaoyu? I shall not spoil the fun and reveal further.
THE SECRET is the first film production in Asia that has been deemed adaptable by Broadway and even gotten the approval from Jay Chou. While it stays true to Secret’s originality, you can be sure that the Broadway creative team have added their own touch by using props and a set based on the movie’s design.
The musical also re-created a stunning travel through time special effects which I was totally impressed with. With comedic dialogue, unexpected new plots and Broadway dance arrangements, The Secret Musical is definitely not to be missed.
Though the musical is without Jay Chou 周杰伦, or even Kwai Lun Mei 桂纶镁, “The Secret” is still as captivating as the original movie. The musical has been created by a top Broadway team for China’s multi-faceted entertainment company China Broadway Entertainment and JVR Entertainment. Hence, if you are looking for a night of surprises and entertainment, remember to catch this musical before 15 April. Tickets booking can be done via the following –
