I have never experienced a Japanese Onsen Spa until recently when I heard from a friend who has been a frequent visitor to Yunomori Onsen, one of the few, if not the only Japanese Onsen in town. Located at a secluded corner of Kallang Wave Mall, it took quite some time for me to find the space. Bothered by a little sweat, however, I was soon comforted by an affable staff of the Spa.
Promptly ushered to a cozy waiting area opposite a neatly designed shoe locker area, I felt this place was insulated from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
After registration, I took a chance to appreciate the organic looking interior and snapped some pictures of course. The ambiance of the space was elevated by a pleasant scent while the natural yellow tone of wood coupled with warm lighting brought me a sense of much needed relaxation.
After collecting my locker key, I proceeded to the changing area. I was given one large with one small towel and was told that only the small towel is allowed inside the baths. By this time I could not contained my excitement to enter the Onsen baths.
Once done with cleaning my body, I found myself right next to the enticing pool. As an enthusiastic first timer, I decided to try all the 6 different pools one by one, soaking in all for 5-10 minutes each for a recommended, varied and thorough experience.
Beginning with the Soda bath, I was massaged by the stream of bubbling hot water. After a few minutes of adjusting to the heat, I moved over to the Jaccuzi. The latter comprises 5 separated beds; each bed fitting one person nicely with optimal space. This was my favourite part of the Onsen experience as I could easily lie on the Jaccuzi bed for half an hour, semi submerging my body while unwinding through watching the huge screen TV.
The star of the night was the newly introduced Yuzu bath, which was definitely a treat for the rainy season. I have eaten and drank this citrus fruit many times, but soaking in it sounds a little decadent, if not excessive. The Yuzu bath smells zesty, much like a hot potent shampoo & body scrub. It was both smooth and silky, the perfect recipe for babylike skin. After a mere 10 minutes soak I could feel the huge difference the tantalising Yuzu bath had on my skin. The citric acid from Yuzu is said to help heal chapped skin while Yuzu oil is believed to simulate the circulatory and respiratory systems.
Warmed, I headed for a little rest at the quiet communal area dressed in my loose Yukata. After waking up from my power nap, I was feeling refreshed, smelling a little like Yuzu and famished, I called on the in-house cafe which is pretty well known to served typical cafe style Japanese fare.
To more surprises ahead, I was treated with a couple of Yuzu delights on their new menu. I chose the appetising Yuzu Soda ($5) and the newly introduced Yuzu Udon ($9.80). The chewy Udon, served with chicken had a great bite to it while the complementing Udon Tsuyu works intricately well with the noodles, coating every strand evenly. The portions were also right, not too little to make you feel stinged nor too much to make you feel bloated.
Finishing my last gulp of the Soda, it seems like Yuzu is quite the right ending to the night. ??♨️??
