Old Airport Road Food Centre

I am always on the quest to find good and affordable food. According to Dr Leslie Tay’s blog, Old Airport Food Centre is the winner for Singapore’s top ten food centre. Thus during the National Day long weekend, together with J, we went to Old Airport food centre. As there are only the 2 of us, we managed to try 2 stalls and one of the them is my favourite local delight – prawn noodles. But I have also consolidated a list of famous stalls. Check them out!

Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodles is located on the first row of stalls facing the road. The range of price of a bowl of noodle starts from $4 to $15. According to the auntie at the stall, the difference in pricing marks the type of prawns and ingredients that are added to the noodles.

To keep things simple, I ordered a bowl of $5 prawn bee hoon (rice vermicelli). There are about 2 medium sized prawns in it. While I think the rice vermicelli is cooked just to my liking, I find that the soup is not as flavorful as I would have preferred. Although it is considered the better ones as compared to the many prawn noodles served else where. Personally, I prefer the one at Owen road (Pek Kio). Like many famous prawn noodle, there is a unceasing queue. Be prepared to wait for at least half an hour before your turn.

On the day I visited Old Airport Road Food Centre also marks the opening of Waan Waan, a coconut ice cream stall opened by a pretty Thai Lady. Besides serving coconut ice cream, there are other flavours such as Thai Milk Tea and Mango ice cream. A “basic” ($3.90) consists of 2 scoops of ice cream and 3 toppings.

Instead of going for the basic, I went for the Thai Mango Sticky Rice ($5.90) which consists of single scoop ice cream, sticky rice, mango and topped with roasted peanuts. I like how the sticky rice is done and how it complemented the juicy diced mangoes. In fact the duo stole the limelight away from the coconut ice cream which seems ordinary alongside them. Although it is not the cheapest or the most yummy coconut ice cream you can find, it offers an alternative to the usual traditional dessert and a way to combat the heat. I would definitely go back again to try the other ice cream flavors if I am around the hood.
