I was in for a surprise when I learnt that The Carvery at Park Alexander is offering a Christmas themed dinner at a pretty neck breaking price. The Carvery is a buffet line, so what this means is that I am gonna have the OPTION of having an unlimited serving of festive food items.
It was my first time at the Carvery and seeing Ole Scheeren’s Interlace from the pool made my worries go away. The icing on top of the cake came from the yellow festive velvet Alexander Cocktail concocted by the mixologists at Aqualuna. I am not exactly a fan of rum ($19++) so I was very satisfied with the non alcoholic version ($16++). Oh yes, it is on the house on 24th, 25th, and 31st December 2019.
The grilled chicken was one of the best version I have tried. Turkey meat can be usually dry and tough and they are usually served in Christmas spread for the sole reason of being festive. The Spit-roasted Chicken with Sweet Orange and Aged Balsamic Glaze was tender, juicy and won me over by the tangy aftertaste. They would be available for takeaway at $46 after the 25th this month, though I would prefer to pair it with the delicious Yorkshire Pudding baked hot and soufflé crisp, so it would be a challenge to have this combination at home.
A formidable rival would be the Gin-aged Angus Beef Prime Ribs, 21 days in an aged rack installed inside the restaurant. Just the existence of the rack is impressive, since aging can be cumbersome. While you cannot expect the beef to have the marbling of wagyu and they should not, they shone with the butter on the side.
Other dishes that I enjoyed included the Trout Fillet with Pomegranate & Citrus Salsa, Wild Mushrooms Truffle Flatbread and Roasted Challand Duck with Savoy Cabbage.
Carvery made a point to add 2 new dessert items on the Christmas Spread this year, the Sticky Date Triffle and Almond Rhubarb Pithivier. I had little affinity with the triffle while I wished the pivithier could be served a little warmed.
The crepe stand is my favourite hangout stop. Crepes are made on the spot upon order and you get an array of dressings on its sides, like banana mango, crushed graham and maple butter. Sadly though the stand is only made available on the 24th, 25th and 31st December.
While the offering at the Carvery was not extensive, it compensates with good quality ingredients and execution, all in a classy setting. The Christmas Spread will officially be launched to the public on 2 December 2019.
