When we think about all things kawaii, Kumoya is always the first theme cafe that I thought of. Needless to say, Kumoya has striked again. Here is one place that you can hang out with your friends or bring your kids to this school holiday. Sumikkogurashi x Kumoya pop up cafe will be opened from today, 12 March 2021 for a limited time at Orchard Central
What is Sumikkogurashi?
Sumikkogurashi are actually a group of characters created by San-X Japan (the people behind Cinnamoroll, Miffy, My Little Pony, Pusheen, Rilakkuma, Tarepanda, Blurred dog and many others) who live a quiet and solitary life in the corner. They don’t like to be in the center of the room and would often rush back to their comfort zone if they taken to the center of the room.
Together with Shirley Wong (@littlemissbento) and Kumoya’s kitchen crew, Sumikkogurashi inspired theme items will be served at Kumoya x Sumikkogurashi pop-up cafe at Orchard Central. Besides, snacks such as Teriyaki Chicken Sticks ($13.90), Handcut Nacho Cheese Fries ($12.90) and Ocean Fresh Seafood in a Box (($15.90), there will be mains, kawaii desserts and drinks served in the cafe.
I like the character of Tokage the most hence I have ordered Gone Fishing Tokage Salmon Croquette Cream Rice ($25.90) as my mains. It is so cute with a Butterfly pea flower infused Japanese Rice Tokage sitting on a hand-breaded salmon croquette sitting in a pool of mushroom cream sauce with carrot fish swimming it in. You can also spot Nisetsumuri, Tokage’s good friend, sitting on top of his head.
There are a total of 5 mains available which include a cold udon ($25.90), beef stew ($25.90), Aglio Olio ($23.90)as well as a big breakfast set ($24.90).
For those with sweetthooth, you can also order popcorn waffles ($25.90), blueberry chiffon cake ($22.90) or Matcha Terrarium Garden ($24.90).
Drinks are not forgotten too. Shirley Wong (@littlemissbento) has also designed ultra looking kawaii drinks to match the theme. I have ordered Mango Yuzu Frappe ($13.90) which is topped with whipped cream and 3 Shiratama Dango while Adrian ordered a Lychee Blossom Iced Tea ($12.90). There are also hot beverages such as Hot Chocolate ($11.90), Latte ($11.90) and Hot Matcha Latte ($12.90). For those who want something more kawaii, there is a Shirokuma Kawaii Strawberry Soda ($16.90) which has a ball of cotton candy sitting on top of the soda.
Kumoya x Sumikkogurashi pop-up cafe is definitely a nice cafe to hang out at if you like all things Japanese and Kawaii. Do remember to make your table reservation via Chope or Kumoya social media sites to avoid the long queue. There is also a 90 minutes dining time restriction so don’t take too long to make your order so that you can enjoy longer at the cafe.
There is even a corner where you can shop for a variety of cafe exclusive Sumikkogurashi merchandise. Oh yes, did I mentioned that Kumoya x Sumikkogurashi pop-up cafe is also muslim friendly with No Pork, No Lard and No Alcohol and prepared by a team of Muslim staff and all the ingredients are also sourced from major Halal distributors and suppliers.
