Food Review – Restaurant Home @ Railway Mall (Upper Bukit Timah)

Located at Railway Mall, Restaurant Home is a Cantonese restaurant co-owned by Celebrity Chinese Chef Tan Yong Hua.
Chef Tan ,was formerly the Chinese Executive Chef at five-star hotels such as Marina Mandarin (Peach Blossom) and Raffles the Plaza (Sze Chuan Court), believes in making everything from scratch. Thus the birth of Restaurant Home.

The renovation here adopted traditional Chinese restaurant concept and the focus here is to allow customers to have a taste of home cooked food – food cooked with the freshest ingredients without adding of any msg into the cooking.
The Barbecued Peking Duck with lychee wood ($38 1/2 duck & $68 whole duck) is served firstly with the crispy duck skin is served with sugar at the side.
Then the meat is to be eaten with spring onion, cucumber and sweet bean sauce with popiah skins rolled around the fillings
For the second serving ($10) from the left-over of peking duck, there is a choice of wok-fried, deep-fried and cooked into a soup. We tried the deep-fried version with dried chilli, roasted minced garlic and capsicum. The dish is very fragrant and reminded me of the aroma of mala xiang guo.
One of my favorite dish of the night is Baked Marble Goby with Chef Tan in-house Recipe ($9 per 100g).  Instead of using the usual cooking method, steaming for fresh fish, the fish is baked in a claypot using ginger and lemongrass as the base. The fish is cooked to perfection that every bite is a fragrant tender piece of fish. I can’t help it but to get a second serving and a third serving. lol
Homemade Egg Bean curb with Shrimp Paste, Crabmeat and Roe in Pi Pa Style ($18) is something special that you can’t find elsewhere. The bean curb is homemade with ingredients such as shrimp paste, mushroom, egg and water chestnut. It is first deep fried then served with crabmeat and roe sauce. The crunchiness of the water chestnut and the eggy aroma of the bean curb made this dish very addictive to have.
Another of my favourite is Stewed  Golden Noodles with Lobster and Spring Onion wapped in O Ba Leave (Seansonal Price). According to Chef Tan, the golden noodles are made from his unique recipe and has no alkaline in it. Bravo! Personally not a big fan of that. The noodles are very flavourful and the lobster is tender and fresh!
The soup of the day ($20) was Boiled Dried Vegetables with Candy Dates, Wolfberry and Pork. It preserves the natural sweetness of the ingredients used and made it something very satisfying dish to warm the tummy.
I am also very blessed to have a preview on several dishes that are serving as lunch set which comes with a soup of the day, mains and dessert (Chilled Rosella Flower Jelly with Diced Mango). One of the set is Crispy Roast Pork with Homemade Yellow Noodles ($24++).
The Barbecued Duck with Lychee Wood served with Homemade Yellow Noodles Set ($24++) served during lunch is value for money. Every serving is a quarter of a duck that is infused with the fragrance of the imported lychee wood.
This year, Chef Tan is also joining the Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014 to celebrate Singapore’s unique hawker heritage while raising funds for the needy and disadvantaged with his signature – Lychee Wood Roasted Duck Rice. So why not enjoy some lovely food while doing charity.
Another of my favourite is the Homemade Ramen with 8 Head Quality Amidori Abalone ($26++ for a 3 course set). The noodles are springy and with the abalone sauce it is both flavourful and addictive. The abalone used is fresh abalone that is prepared and cooked for more than 8 hours. Thus the abalonne is tender, soft and slightly chewy. Yum Yumz!
The Chilled Rosella Flower Jelly with Diced Mango ($6 per person) is quite well received as well by the ladies as it is refreshing. The rosella jelly is slightly sourish and together with the diced mango, it creates a well balanced experience to end the meal.
Although this is an invited food tasting event, I would say that I enjoyed the dinning experience at “Home”. Food served for the night has more hits than misses. I would recommend people to come “Home” for lunch if you are in the west area. The portion for the lunch set is rather generous and can be shared between 2 persons.

For foodie who likes to enjoy food while doing charity do mark your calender on 22 Nov 2014 to be there at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre Hall 401 & 402! I am sure you do not want to miss a foodie paradise that is curated by Maureen Ow (www.MissTamChiak.com), Derrick Tan (www.SgFoodOnFoot.com) and Ian Low (TheSilverChef.blogspot.sg).
