Do you know that Pen Cai aka Poon choi was originated in the Southern Song Dynasty and was served in huge wooden basin? And yes, if you are looking at getting this auspicious Chinese New Year dish, that symbolizes cohesion, like how it was served in the olden days, check out the ones from Cherry Garden in Mandarin Oriental.
Packed generously with luxurious ingredients such as braised four- head abalone, lobsters, scallops, sea cucumbers, prawns, roasted duck, lotus chicken, roasted pork belly and many more, the Pen Cai at Cherry Garden is more soupy instead of having a thick gravy to allow one to savour MORE of the premium ingredients. Oh yes, don’t forget to get the meat balls! They are so springy and have a nice textural bite. So much so that despite being filled to the brim, a huge part of me really wanted to go for round 2! This item will be available for takeaway as well, at $340 to feed 5 pax (or more) and $680 for 10 pax with 2 days advance order.
For year of Pig, there are five Yu Shengs available, from Bountiful Yu Sheng with Alaskan crab meat, salmon, black truffle and black caviar (small $138, Large $276) to a vegetarian option with fresh fruits and vegetables (small $78, Large $146) . Not forgetting uniquely Cherry Garden signature julienned Rosella fruit and velvety spring onion sauce to toss to a year of endless wealth and prosperity.
Braised Pig’s Trotter with Black Moss is 1 dish that Cantonese would eat for its felicitous meaning of windwall and good things come. At Cherry Garden’s Joyous Chinese New Year Set Menu ($148 per guest, minimum of two guest) and Prosperity Chinese New Year Set Menu($158 per guest, minimum of two guests), the dish was elevated with braised 6 head abalone in that thick flavorsome gravy. If you are looking for takeaway of the Braised Pig’s Trotter with Black Moss, it is $68 for a whole trotter.
Braised ee-fu noodles are served on most of the Chinese New Year Menu. Trust me, this noodle paired perfectly with the house made XO sauce to satisfy both your palate and your tummy while eating your way to longevity and ever lasting love.
Of course for an increasing prosperous year ahead, we need to have some rice cake aka nian gao and fried sesame balls aka Jian Dui. These soft bite size nian gao are presented in a thin and crispy golden shells wrapping around them. They are highly addictive as they are not sticky to the teeth and the sweetness hits the right spot.
Wrapping up the meal with something light and refreshing, Chilled aloe vera jelly with lemongrass and dried rose petals are served to those who chose the Success, Joyous or Prosperity Chinese New Year Menu.
