I have always loved the west side of Singapore as I am a westie all my life. One of my favourite ice cream place in the west is The Milky Way which is located near Commonwealth MRT. Previously, it was run by Campus SuperStar (season 1) runner up, Renfred Ng and his parents. This cosy little cafe is just behind Tanglin Halt Market and Food Centre.
Currently, the business is run by Alfred (Renfred’s elder brother), his girlfriend, Carol and his parents. The ice cream here are home made using the best ingredients that they can get their hands on. I have met Alfred on several occasions when I visited The Milky Way and I can see the passion he has for the ice cream he served. Before any flavour is out for sale in the shop, they have gone through many rounds of R&D. If the flavour is not right, it is not for sale.
One of the flavour that intrigued me the most is the Smurf ice cream ($3.80 for a single scoop). It is a mystery flavour. While some people say it tastes like bubblegum, I say it tastes like toffee candy. In hues of beautiful blue made with the natural colouring of butterfly pea flowers (also found in nyonya kueh and thai purple drink, Nam Dok Anchan), there are no worries of eating anything artificial. I like to pair it with their homemade cone cup ($1.20) or waffle.
One should not miss the waffle at Milky Way if you visit this cafe. The waffle batter is freshly made everyday by Alfred’s mum and can be customised to your liking. Be it more crispy or more cakey, just highlight it when you are placing your order. On top of that, you can choose whether you want a whole waffle ($8.80) or a half waffle ($5).
Milky way is also serving their own blend, a blend of Ethiopia, Brazil and Columbia coffee beans. Peeps who prefer their coffee to be more robust and heavy bodied, do give their coffee a try.
For tea lovers, there is Clipper Tea for you. IMO it is very value for money. For a pot ($5.50), it can be refilled at least 3 times without losing the flavour of the tea. Recently weather has been very hot, if you are inclined to have something cold, do try their earl grey ice cream which is made from Clipper tea as well.
Besides delicious ice cream and waffles, the service here will also made you feel at home. Alfred is a friendly guy who can talk to you about anything under the sun. On separate occasions when I was there, he chatted with my friends like they have known each other for a long while. So do drop by and check out this place if you are around the vicinity. As nothing warms my heart more than a family of passionate people serving good ice cream within the best that they can offer to the customers.
