On Lok Yun is commonly one of the destinations that is in the itinerary of most foodies travelling to Bangkok. After travelling to Bangkok for “N” times, I have finally made my way to it (Yes, I am so WOLS).
Located about 15 mins walk from Yaowarat Road [if you walk from T&K Seafood (ต๋อย&คิด)], On Lok Yun feels like a Bangkok version of Chin Mei Chin in Singapore.
With more than 80 years of history, be prepared to soak in the charming vintage vibes that is emitting from every corner of the shop.
Besides offering kaya toasts, french toast and drinks, simple western breakfast affair (40 to 95 baht) is spotted here. But since you have made your way here, skip the western breakfast and just go for what On Lok Yun is famous for, the bread and the egg custard aka kaya!
Good news for those who enjoy Thai Kaya, you can buy a small container of it for 40 baht at On Lok Yun.
Besides the famous Bread with egg custard dip (28 baht), we also ordered French Toast (Small -35 baht; Large – 70 baht) and Bread with butter and sugar (23 baht). To our surprise, unanimously we have fallen in love with the Bread with Butter and Sugar. Yes, a live live must order item for me! Such a simple item yet it has brought great satisfaction to our trip to On Lok Yun. The butter has lightly salted the soft and fluffy charcoal toasted bread. With that crispy exterior, it is simplicity at its best!
Don’t forget to order some drinks and soft boiled egg for that wholesome local thai breakfast experience. =)
Do give On Lok Yun a try if you have any spare time in Bangkok. This is definitely a place whereby the time has paused (in a good way) as compared to the rest of Bangkok. Major craving for the Bread with butter and sugar now!
