Cafe Hopping: FatCat Ice Cream Bar @ Bedok North Ave 2

 Bedok Ave 2
FatCat Ice Cream Bar is the latest new kid of the block, joining the vibrant cafe scene in Bedok area. Located in a quiet HDB area opposite Bedok Library, FatCat has been in the social media limelight for its beautiful and highly instagrammable desserts since its opening in January.

The ice creams at FatCat are all homemade and they offer interesting flavours such as Hay & Honey, Butterbeer (Yes, you hear me right. It is butterbeer ice cream inspired by Harry Potter novels)…etc
ice cream
plated desserts
Besides ice cream, there is also a plated dessert menu which is on a rotational basis with limited quantity available daily. Yes, first come first serve, be there early or be ready to be disappointed.
banana nutella
On my first visit, I reached at about 6pm on a Saturday and ordered the Banana Nutella ($9) as the rest of the plated dessert are all sold out. Caramelised Banana served with nuts and Hay & Honey ice-cream and a mystery powder that my peeps and I thought that there might be a tinge of sour plum powder. lol
ice cream sorbet
Clockwise: Passion fruit Sorbet, Apricot Sorbet and Grapefruit Sorbet

My peeps and I enjoyed the ice cream served here. Not only the sweetness is just right, the flavours are also quite intense and yet nothing artificial. From what I understand from the staff, the ice cream are all made from scratch. The 3 flavours that we have chosen are so good that, to be frank, I couldn’t make up my mind on which is my favourite.

Tom Yum Granita
A few weeks later, I went back to FatCat again in hope to try the plated desserts that I missed out previously. Kiasu me went at about 1pm (Note: FatCat opens at 12pm). I was kind of happy that I managed to try the Tom Yum Granita ($5). It is like tom yum soup in the icy form. The granita melted the moment it kissed my mouth and left behind lovely lingering flavors of lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, fresh Thai chilies, and fresh lime juice. P.S: Though there is a faint tinge of spiciness, it is nothing too overwhelming. In fact, it is refreshing and leave me craving for more even when I am updating my blog now. 🙂
lime mojito sphere
Using reverse spherification, the lime mojito sphere ($4.50) is like a breath of fresh air to the local dessert scene. Beautifully plated on a wooden spoon, the lime mojito BURST in the mouth leaving me with a mouthful of liquid, akin to sweeten lime juice with a thin layer of jelly. No wonder it is so well instagrammed. However for price tag, I think it is slightly steep.
Waffles

The original waffle ($4) is served with salted caramel sauce and a sprinkle of lavender flowers. It is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I also ordered butterbeer ice cream ($4.50) and chocolate ice cream ($3.90). While 2 of us like the butterbeer ice cream, another 2 of us don’t like the alcohol aftertaste. I guess food is really very subjective, isn’t it?

charcoal ice cream
Available only in limited quantity as well, the gourmet waffle (charcoal waffles with salted egg yolk sauce) is also served with salted caramel sauce and a sprinkle of lavender flowers. Although the salted egg yolk sauce is slightly on the watery consistency, I like how it compliments with everything else on the plate.
shop deco
As much as I would travel for food, it is rather rare for me to go back to the same cafe within a month. Besides serving really delicious ice creams, I think Fatcat did a fantastic job in marketing. My friends who reached Fatcat at 2pm plus on the same afternoon as I did, did not have the chance to try the gourmet waffles nor the lime mojito spheres as they are all sold out. I hope that more servings of the plated desserts and gourmet waffles will be served in the future so that more people get to share the love for delicious desserts. Do give Fatcat a try and share with me, how do you feel about it.
