All this endless raining in August had made me want to stay home instead and for someone who never really eat takeaway food, the new delivery-only National Month Special menu at Tonkichi proved to be too much of a sway. Tonkichi’s Ton-Katsus are fried upon order using a special panko flour mix to ensure they stay crispy longer.
The new 6 items are not available for dine-in over at their five outlets. Apart from the Kushiage of Asparagus, Mushroom, Sweet Potato, Lady Finger, Lotus Root ($10.90 which is also deep fried meat/ vegetables using a different kind of batter from the Tempura), the other 5 items were variations of the Katsudon which Tonkichi is famous for.
We usually eat our Katsudon with some plum Tare and mustard but taking a cue from our beloved crab dishes, Tonkichi has created a period limited Black Pepper ($17) and Chili Crab ($19) Katsudon. They were both fiery and went well with my fried cutlet and rice. I have never though of a wacky Katsudon like that and certainly never thought this combination would ever work!
For salted egg lovers, check out their Salted Egg Katsudon ($18) which was purportedly the most ordered item. The sauce was creamy and added an extra layer of salted egg savour to the compositon. Imagine the instance when the egg yolk was broken and mixed into the carbonara sauce. It was the closest metaphor I could think of.
The last two items, the Spicy Cheese Katsudon and Tomato Sauce Katsudon (both $17) were also good though not unique and I do not know how they could be related to Singapore’s food heritage.
With the island wide sold out Macdonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger and Chendol McFlurry, I don’t think there is such thing as too much National Day inspired food.
