Tiong Bahru Food Trail

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry
It has been a while since I did a food trail. Hence I would like to use this blog post as a reminder for me to go back to Tiong Bahru to finish this food trail. Last week, I was at Tiong bahru and I have decided to drop by 2 of the F&B outlets that I have been wanting to try. Well it is not hard to guess that one of them is Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, right?

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry
Located at the stretch facing Tiong Bahru road (in between Sin Hoi San and chapter 55), Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry is like a gem where time has stood still. Despite all the fancy pretty bakes that Singaporeans are introduced to, the crowd at Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry is unceasing. From the moment I stepped into the shop till I left (within 10 minutes), I have seen at least 4 different group of people walking in and buying the bakes and kueh kueh here.

To be frank, I have yet to try all of the kueh kueh here but the Kueh Dar-Dar (White Coconut Roll) 白椰子卷 ($0.80), Lemper Ayam (chicken) 鸡肉糯米卷 ($1.30), Lemper Udang (Sambal Shrimp) 蓝花糯米虾卷 ($1.30), have been highly raved by many of my friends.

I was so happy to find some old school coconut tarts and egg tarts here too. $0.90 each? Such an affordable price which you can hardly get these days.

If you are looking for something with a modern twist, there are cheese chiffon cake! Oh my god, can you imagine those fluffy cakes with a savory touch? me likey!

Hong Heng Fried Hokkien Mee
Located at Tiong Bahru Market (first stall on your left when you come up from the escalator) Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Noodle has been listed as one of the 17 food stalls in the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2016. Of all the Fried Sotong Prawn Noodles, why is Hong Heng the only one that is listed? Out of curiosity, I told myself I must live live go and try.

There was much queue and I waited about 10 minutes for my prawn noodles. Relatively fast as compared to the other stall, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand. The queue at the other end was much longer. So am I considered blessed or what. lol

From the first look, the fried sotong prawn noodles was moist and a bee hoon with the thickness between the thin bee hoon and thick bee hoon was used.

After squeezing the lime juice and mixed well, I had my first mouthful. To be frank, the fried sotong prawn noodle was above average. But I would prefer it to have more “wok hei” and more flavourful.

Would I be back or queue for it again? No, I would not. For me, I feel that there are many stalls with better fried sotong prawn noodles around. I would still prefer to go to the one in whampoa market or even kim keat one instead.
