Tian Wang Dessert: Mahjong themed cafe in Jalan Besar

No doubt about it, many people like the tile-based game, Mahjong. So much so that one family has recently opened a dessert shop along Jalan Besar with a huge Mahjong wall paper and a ‘發’ word neon light as the centerpiece.

As the cafe has been getting a lot of traction from social media, it was rather crowded. But we were quite blessed to arrive around 5pm on a weekend before the queue started to really form. Hence, we queued for about 5 to 10 minutes before we getting a table.

Just like many local dessert shops in Singapore, there is a wide selection available which include Mango Sago ($4.20), Bubur Cha Cha ($3.80) and Red Bean with Lotus Seeds ($4.20).

Mango pomelo sago ($4.80) is quite a generous serving with diced mango and pomelo. However, it is sweeter than how we would like it to be.

Green bean soup ( $3.80) is the cheapest among the 4 desserts that we have ordered. One of my dining partner commented that it is very homey. Although green bean soup has never been my kind of thing, I like it that it is the least sweet among the four.

I have always been a fan of Orh Nee aka Yam paste. I like that the Yam paste at Tian Wang 甜旺 is served with pumpkin and Ginkgo ($4.80). It is smooth and creamy. While I might like my orh nee with shallot oil (my favourite is the one in Serangoon Shopping Centre), the orh nee is decent and worth giving it a try.

We have also ordered the Mao San Wang Durian Mousse ($9) to try. There is an option to order it with one or 2 scoop of durian puree and we opted for 1 (for the obvious reason, lol). We like that the durian puree is really gao (thick) and you can taste the durian pulp. However, just like what many of my foodie friends who have tried it, they would prefer it to be more creamy.

Overall, the desserts are decent but I would not wait for more than 30 minutes to have my dessert ready (self serve with collection at the counter). Nevertheless, I would still keep this place in mind if I am craving for dessert in the middle of the night.
