ShuKuu Izakaya 酒空居酒屋

I have always thought that working in Tanjong Pagar is a huge blessing in terms of the selection of F&B outlets available. The number of F&B in this area is massive!!! Being a sake lover, I have been quite spoilt for choices. One of the sake bars around the area is ShuKuu Izakaya 酒空居酒屋 at Stanley Street. To be honest, I have visited this place last year together with some friends and I was kinda disappointed as the experience I had was not on par with the good reviews I read on this place. But with a revamped menu, I have decided to give it a try again.

From the Hajime section of the menu, we ordered the Agedashi Tofu ($6) which I totally adored for its smooth and soft texture on the inside with a slight crispy golden exterior. Oh yes, dashi broth that seat below these golden pillows was flavourful yet light.

Salmon Sashimi ($14) was like a staple for me whenever I visit a Japanese restaurant but the highlight was Hokkaido Scallops with Mentaiko and Cheese ($17). The scallops were seared till they were just cooked with the moisture retained. With the creaminess from the mentaiko and the natural savoriness from the cheese with ikura, the combo was perfect! In fact, it was very addictive!

I was also introduced to Dried Stingray fin ($12) which I was quite skeptical initially. But guess what, this is one of the best items to go with SAKE! The dried stingray fin was sweet yet savoury and packed with the flavours of the sea. When it was paired with the sake, the sake seems to taste sweeter and the aroma of the sake was elevated!

Tori No Cabbage ($7) aka cabbage and minced chicken stew was a bowl of comfort food that I would gladly have for any day. The stew was flavourful and hearty with the cabbage being soft and sweet!

One shouldn’t miss the Buta Minced Katsu aka homemade minced pork cultet ($10) if you are in Shukuu! The well seasoned and juicy core was beautifully enveloped by a non greasy golden shell. As a non pork lover, I was surprised how much I have enjoyed this dish.

My latest vist to Shukuu Izakaya was nothing but a delightful one. In fact, all the dishes that we have ordered were well executed and we adored the Japanese paintings with bright lanterns that seems to teleport us into the heart of Japan. If wonderlust is kicking you, this is definitely a place to be at!
