Portico’s interactive Saturday

There is no lack of restaurants and eateries in Singapore. But to find a family friendly resturant where there is interactive session to engage the diners to another level, there aren’t many. Tucked inside a small business park along Alexandra road is this spacious restaurant. Portico, which means porch in Italian and the kitchen is helmed by local chef Nixon Low.

At a young age, Chef Nixon has worked in several establishments such as The Scarlet Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Restaurant Andre, Saint Pierre and Petite Menu. Collaborated with local food suppliers, he has revamped the menu using the fresh seasonal ingredients with Modern European Cooking Technique. Unusual items such as pan-seared Pulau Ubin sea bass and butternut pumpkin risotto with dried shrimp are spotted on the menu. On Saturdays, there are interactive events which diners can take part in after having lunch at Portico. The activities will change every month and best of all it is free of charge. For the month that I have joined the interactive session, they were having Latte Art Demo class with Hands on session. Each of us had the chance to make our very own latte. The barista started the workshop explaining some fundamentals of working on the coffee machine before she did a demo. After that, we tamped our own coffee grind, frothed our own milk and tried to pour a latte art under her guidance. After the coffee making session, we had a session on plating our very own Tomato Salad. As what Chef Nixon said, plating could narrate the character of each person. Each and every one of us was given the same ingredients but somehow there is a slight differences in each plating. After learning more about plating and hands on to make our own tomato salads, we get to enjoy it afterwards. This is definitely an interesting experience.Tada~~ The tomato salad made by J and me. Guess which is mine? The last part of the interactive session was a short session where Carl, one of the founders of Pollen Nation shared about the different type of honeys. After that, we got to sample different type of honeys, including honey from the sting-less bees they have relocated from Sentosa Cove.Coincidentally it was also Ivan’s birthday and the restaurant has planned a surprise for him shortly after the interactive session ended. Thank you Openrice and Portico for the media invite.
