Food Review: Ivy’s Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup @ Kim Keat Palm Food Centre

One of the most blessed thing about working in Toa Payoh is Toa Payoh is a food heaven! Recently I stumbled upon a very yummilious mutton soup stall at Kim Keat Palm Food Centre.

Ivy’s Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup is located at a corner near to the cross section of the stall and easily spotted with a queue. On top of that, Ivy’s Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup is also featured in the newspaper.

Although the price tags along to the mutton soup is considered slightly more expensive as compare to other hawker centre food, I decided to go ahead to try it. I ordered the dry version mutton soup ($7.90) as it come with a bowl of soup as well. Best of the both world!

So how does the dry version mutton soup fare?
The presentation of the food reminded me of stir-fried meat from the Tze char stall. On top of that, it is so fragrant that my colleagues were all curious about it when I came back to our table. After tasting the mutton, all of us agreed that the mutton is tender, without gaminess and has this little bit of spiciness to tickle the palate. Beside the generous serving of mutton, what I like is there are also black fungus. Black fungus is known for reducing high blood cholesterol and anything that is good for health is mega love love to me.On top of that, black fungus is tasteless by itself but it absorbs the flavour of the other food when cooked together. So the black fungus here is simply amazing! Crunchy and full of flavour!

How about the soup?
Although the soup looks oily but it has this herbal taste that is just right, not too overpowering yet not too bland either. The full flavour of the soup is being enjoyed when you eat the tau pok as it has absorbed all the flavours from the soup. Yummy!

For chilli lovers, do try the chilli here together with the mutton. The taste of the chilli is rather unique and my only complaint is it is not spicy enough for me.

To conclude, this is definitely a stall that I will visit again. I feel that the mutton soup here is rather unique as compare to other places. On top of that, I like the fact that there is no gaminess in the mutton despite the absence of being laden with ginger. Best of all, at $7.90, I get the dry version and the soup to go along with my rice. Imo it’s value for money! Do try it and share with me your views about it. ^^
