Food Review: 1933 Singapore @ Capitol Piazza

1933 is the latest F&B venture from the BreadTalk Group that opened its door in the month of May. With a setting of the nostalgic colonial Singapore and strategically located next to Angelina tea room, it is not hard to fall in love with this place.

On the ground level, there are 2 types of seating, rattan chairs in the courtyard and classic booth seats behind the Peranakan-motif tiled bar counter. If you prefer a view over looking Capitol Theatre, you can proceed to the 2nd level of this 80 seater cafe.
Cucumber Mint Tea (Hot $8; Cold $10)
Koi Latte

There are quite a variety of beverages available. Besides organic tea, something unique here is the nanyang coffee presented in the espresso style. If you are a nanyang coffee lover, perhaps you can try the kopi latte which is a hybrid of kopi and latte.

Sawadee Green ($14.90)
For starters, we had Sawadee Green, a thai style salad. I highly recommend this dish if you are a thai food lover. The acidity in the dish awakened the taste buds and had me reaching out for more.
Secret Pumpkin ($9.60)
It is good to know that the bread bowls served are all baked in house. They have the basis of a delicious bread, soft on the inside with a crispy crust on the outside. Though the flavour of the soup is there, I prefer my soup to be thicker and creamier.
Nanyang Curry Chicken in Bread Bowl ($14.90)

The curry was flavourful and rich with a variety of ingredients such as kampong chicken pieces, potato chucks and carrots. I like how well the curry gravy went with the homemade bread bowl.

Grilled Pork Loin ($28.90)

This is one dish that surprised me. To be frank, I am not a big fan of pork but this is one dish that I don’t mind having. The pork chop was well seasoned with herbs and is very tender and juicy. Well done 1933!

Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice ($16.80)

As a fan of chicken rice, 1933 surprised me again with the rice. It is both fragrant and flavourful. Kampong chicken are used to give a less oily texture but I was a bit disappointed with the flavour of the chicken. It was not as flavourful as I would like it to be. Quite a pity as the chilli was as spicy as the way I like it.

Gula Melaka Pandan Cake ($8.90)

Nevertheless, we ended the tasting on a good note with the delicious Gula Melaka Pandan Cake. The Gula Melaka by the side is thick and concentrated. Thus, half the battle is won as I am a gula melaka lover. The pandan chiffon cake was soft and there are gula melaka fillings in the middle as well. Overall, it is a great dessert to end the night as all the elements of the dessert worked very well together.

Berry Bliss ($8)
For peeps like me, who has a tongue for sourish beverages, this drink is highly recommended. It is a blend of berries, lemonade and fresh mint. It is very refreshing and I think it goes well with the Gula Melaka Pandan Cake.
Overall there are more hits than misses. I like the interior deco of 1933 and also most food are affordable and delicious. With some tweaking, I believe it has its place to stay. Currently, there are some promotions running such as the weekday lunch promotion which include a main and a drink for $19.33++. For more information, do check out 1933’s Facebook or Instagram. Thank you 1933 Singapore and The Influencer Network for the invite.
