Cafe Hopping: The Coffee Academics Singapore

The Coffee Academics from Hongkong is finally here in Singapore at Scotts Square! Listed as one of the coffee shop to visit in Buzzfeed with its unpretentious coffee. Any coffee lovers out there who is as excited as me?

Currently the 3000sqft shop space is still under renovation. But coffee lovers fret not as there is a pop up kiosk that is operating till 4pm daily. The coffee beans are roasted in Hongkong and air flown in weekly! So coffee beans are as fresh as they can be in Hongkong! Awesome max isnt it?Although currently there is only espresso based coffee available at the pop up kiosk while the renovation works begin, I found myself elated with the 3 beans coffee blend from Colombia, El Salvador and Ethiopia.  I ordered a latte and it was medium bodied, velvety with a nutty finish. I am very excited with the 7 concepts sensory lab that is coming to us soon. Besides espresso bar, there is a cupping area, tea bar, custom blend area, brew bar (chemex, aeropress, syphon), roasting corner with a 2kg roasting machine and an open concept kitchen. I am so looking forward to a coffee place that has almost everything under the same roof!

Currently there is no food except for some pretty cupcakes from Crème Maison Bakery ($6 each). There is also an option to choose from vanilla bean or valrhona chocolate base.

However, there is a promotion for the afternoon tea set that we can get a cup of coffee with a pretty cupcake for $10. While we enjoyed the coffee, the butter cream filling from the cupcake was too sweet for us. It was like biting into the sugar with every mouthful. I have given my feedback and they may have tweaked the recipe subsequently.

Athough the location is in the midst of the shopping mall, it was rather quiet and it makes a great place to do girly catch up. Currently there is only 3 tables seating as it is only a pop up kiosk. But we have no problem getting a table and taking pictures.

So do check them out if you are around the vicinity. Like all cafes, last order of the coffee usually takes place half an hour before the closing time, so go there before 3.30pm to avoid disappointment. I have went back to The Coffee Academics several times and I realised that different barista will have different brewing result. If you are looking for your medium bodied and velvety cup of joe, there is a female barista who usually do a fantastic job. 😉
