When I was a kid, my mother would always brew some barley or water chestnut with sugar cane for me and my siblings. Drinks like this always prevent me from falling sick no matter how terrible the weather was. As I grow up, mum has kinda “retired” but J would always “make” some “liang teh” aka traditional cooling tea for me from any supermarket nearby. I remember being skeptical with “packed” barley as the taste would be too sweet and the cooling properties would generally be compromised (This is purely based on my own impression).
However I was wrong. F&N NutriTea Barley is brewed with dried winter melon and tasted just like what Mummy brewed for me when I was younger. It is good to know that it contains no added preservatives or colourings and it is cholesterol free. Best of all, with only 6.7 grams of sugar per 100ml, it is 25% less sweet than regular barley drinks found at the supermarket.
Besides Barley, NurtiTea has 3 other brewed teas to counter the heat and to help our body restore its natural balance. Water chestnuts have been known to reduce heatiness and help to detoxify the body of impurities. Sugar cane is an excellent alternative to white refined sugar and contains health boosting proteins that benefits metabolism. When brewed together, it gives the drink a natural sweetness while reducing the heatiness in our body.
Brewed chrysanthemum has been widely known as a ‘cooling’ drink and with wolfberries added, the drink is packed with antioxidants and vitamins. The drink is refreshing with hints of floral notes which made it a popular drink amongst those residing in the tropical climate.
One of my favourite is Lemongrass with ginger tea as it is very refreshing and serves as a perfect quencher for the hot weather. While lemongrass can help relieve colitis, indigestion and gastroenteritis ailments, ginger is great for soothing stomach disorders and aids digestion. Though many people would shun away from this drink upon hearing that it is made with ginger, I can assure you that even picky people like J who dislike ginger, love this drink. The aroma of the lemongrass is stronger that the ginger while the gentle infusion of ginger would aid in dispelling toxins from the body.
