Ever since St Pierre moved out of their premises from Central Mall on Magazine Road a few years back, I have yet to go to this very quiet part of the Central Business District until my recent Happy Hour visit to the newly opened Oyster Co.
Few things caught my attention. Besides the really affordable price point, the interior decor here can be considered unsightly even though they had just finished with their renovation works. Not that it really matters since we are more concern with our culinary pleasures and how wallet-friendly they are. Just to give you an idea of how affordable the items are over here, the main courses cost $10 each while our glass of lemon tea costs $2.50.
We had half a dozen of oysters to begin with. Oyster Co sources their oysters from France, Canada or New Zealand depending on their seasonal availability. The Kiwi oysters we had were plump, juicy and fresh. At $1.99 a pop, it was definitely a steal! I cannot help but also order a glass of Mount Monster Sauvignon Blanc ($12) to complement these babies.
I thought the Cauliflower 3 Ways ($10) was pretty impressive, more so since such a cooking style is less common in a pub establishment like Oyster Co. So you get roasted, a purée and a deep fried version of cauliflower all in one plate linked together only by the burnt butter quinoa and some tasty mushrooms. I adore this Holy Trinity. It was very enjoyable!
The Galician style Octopus ($10) is a dish you can find in most Spanish Tapaeria. It comprises of cut octopus cooked in garlic aioli and squid ink mash. The two keys here are to try not to overcook and retain whichever desirable flavours to the octopus. The one here was comparable to most others I have had.
Meat lovers would consider the Three Layer Pork Belly ($10) a lovely treat. Individual slices of the pork were sous vide for many hours before being pan fried and paired with a spicy Hainanese chili sauce. While the taste are imaginable, the chef’s execution is a better gauge for comparison.
The Squid Ink Paella ($10) was our final rice dish from the Tapas Menu. It came with squid, mussels and shrimps on a reasonable amount of black ink rice.
I also had the chance to try one item from their lunch menu, the Beef Bowl with Brown Rice ($10), spinach sautéed mushrooms and one poached egg. With all the needed nutrition in mind, this healthy bowl seems like a misfit for a menu filled with bar grub. A pork option is also available for the same price.
Other lunch specials include Fish & Chips ($10), Klang Bak Kut Teh with rice ($10) and Oyster Co’s own version of Curry Chicken with rice ($10). So depending on what time of the day you come, there is always something for you with a standard price-tag.
So who cares about Happy Hour when you can have Happy Day (even over the weekend)? You can now make your reservation via Chope. Happy Monday, guys!
